While work on stardom celebrity has acknowledged the existence of hierarchies of fame, surprisingly little attention has been paid to how such hierarchies are gendered. It will investigate our fascination with selfdestructive female celebrities such as Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse and Lindsay Lohan, and ask Is female celebrity depreciating in value? Are selfdestructive male celebrities treated differently?

We will explore whether such hierarchies have intensified of late and the factors which are shaping this process, while also reflecting on how this shift might constitute challenge for the next wave of scholarship on stardomcelebrity. Entitled Going Cheap? Female celebrity in the tabloid, reality and scandal genres, the oneday event on has been organised by Prof Negra and Dr Susan Holmes, both of UEAs School of Film and Television Studies will examine how discourses of tabloidism, reality, and scandal shape the construction of female celebrity in contemporary and historical periods.
